Catholic Charities is part of a network of more than 1,700 agencies and institutions nationwide that reduce poverty, support families, and empower communities for more than 7.8 million people of all faiths a year. Local Catholic Charities work under the umbrella of Catholic Charities USA, founded in 1910 on the campus of Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, as the National Conference of Catholic Charities. Its mission was to promote the creation of diocesan Catholic Charities bureaus, to encourage professional social work practice, “to bring a sense of solidarity” among those in charitable ministries, and to be the “attorney for the poor.” Today, its mission is to vigorously advocate poverty reduction and promote the work of local Catholic Charities agencies and the federal legislative agenda to the media and the general public.
