Montgomery County Licenses and Permits
To operate a Takoma Park business, you need licenses and permits from one or more of the following Montgomery County departments.

Office of the Circuit CourtRetail and Wholesale Businesses If your new business in Montgomery County involves retail, wholesaling items, or opening a chain store, you will need to obtain a Trader's License from the Office of the Circuit Court Clerk. Department of Liquor ControlBars, Restaurants, and Events If you plan on serving or selling alcoholic beverages in Montgomery County, you must first obtain the proper licenses from the Department of Liquor Control, at 240-777-1999.

HealthDivision of Licensure and Regulatory Services If your new business entails running a swimming pool, tanning parlor, camp, health care facility or medical provider, mobile food operation, restaurant, pest control company, private school, nursing home, daycare facility, assisted living, or group home, you must secure a license from the Department of Health & Human Services’ Division of Licensure and Regulatory Services. Consumer ProtectionOffice of Consumer Protection If your new business involves motor vehicle repairs and/or towing, new home construction, radio/tv/appliance installation and repairs, or secondhand personal property, you will need a license from the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection. |   |
Department of Permitting ServicesConstruction/Contracting/Building Trades If your new business is working as an electrical contractor, installing signs, or another construction related trade you will need a license issued by the Department of Permitting Services (DPS). DPS also issues building permits for residential and commercial issues, electrical, sediment control, and right of way (driveway); conducts zoning review; conducts well and septic review; and handles complaints for zoning and building issues. Door-to-door and site specific vending, farming, Benefit and FundraisersIf your new business is working a farm, selling door-to-door, working as a route vendor, selling goods from one site only, or holding a benefit performance (fundraiser for a nonprofit), you need a license issued by the Department of Permitting Services.
